Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together answers to the questions we get asked the most. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just get in touch via the contact tab — we’re always happy to help!

Do you provide sewing machines? Sewing machines are available to hire for classes when booking online.

If you’d like to buy your own, check out our blog guide here: Buying a New Sewing Machine – The Updated Guide Winter 2023. We welcome machines of any age, as long as they have the two squares on the label (double insulated). If you’re unsure, just send us your model number and we’ll check.

Is there anything else I need? We recommend bringing a basic sewing kit to your lesson: fabric scissors, paper scissors, pins, safety pins, greaseproof paper, chalk pencils or vanishing ink pen, ruler, spare machine needles, bobbins, thread, seam ripper, rotary cutter and ruler for quilting, and a dressmaking tape measure. There’s a full list of what to bring on the booking page and in your class emails.

Fabric shops – We’ve listed some of our favourites here: Best UK Fabric Shops. Slippers are welcome if you’d like to sew barefoot or stay extra comfy!

Are there any refreshments? Yes – drinks and snacks are available at our Pheasant Pub venue only.

“You don’t pay me to drink tea! Haha!” ☕

How much are lessons? Each course/class is payable up front. Prices vary depending on the class, but start from just £4 per hour. All prices are already subsidised by grants and sponsors.

What classes are available? We cover a wide range of techniques, from dressmaking to free-motion quilting. Workshops change regularly, so if you don’t see what you’re looking for, sign up to our newsletter or check back soon!

Are the lessons formal? Not at all! Sometimes we’ll spend 10–15 minutes demonstrating a technique as a group, but most of the time classes are step-by-step with teacher guidance. There’s plenty of chatting, tip-sharing, and laughter. No one is ever left behind — your teacher is there to help.

What age do you have to be? Are there children’s sessions? Kids Club is suitable for ages 4+, Teen Club for ages 11+, and evening classes & workshops are for ages 16+ unless advertised otherwise.

Where are you? Adult, children’s, and teen classes Sunday's are held at The Scout Hall, Pen-y-Fai, Court Colman Road, CF31 4NE.

Tuesday  evening classes are at The Pheasant Pub, Pen-y-Fai

Wednesday and Thursday sessions are held at Stitch Studio Brackla.

Do you do clothing alterations? Yes, we do! However, we’re currently full. Our next available slots will be in January 2026. Please note: we do not do wedding dress or bridal alterations.

Do you repair machines? We don’t currently repair or service machines, but we highly recommend Graham Hughes Sewing for expert servicing and repairs.
